Linux tools: Eza is the new Exa (a better ls)

Post by lgillis »

> "eza is a modern, maintained replacement for the venerable file-listing command-line program ls that ships with Unix and Linux operating systems, giving it more features and better defaults. It uses colours to distinguish file types and metadata. It knows about symlinks, extended attributes, and Git. And it’s small, fast, and just one single binary.

By deliberately making some decisions differently, eza attempts to be a more featureful, more user-friendly version of ls."

Unlike the other ls and all file managers except Dolphin, eza also shows if a file has extended attributes (xattr). Those who use KDE will appreciate eza, those who use KDE and don't know what extended attributes are should switch to Gnome or its descendants or at least check their backup strategy. (Gnome and the other crap can't do anything with this - although xattr has been around in the filesystem longer than these desktops, they still refuse to implement it - instead, they priggish delete the extended attributes entered by the user).
