Dare more utopia!

Post by lgillis »

Does anyone know of any current and interesting (science fiction) books on the subject of utopia? (I can no longer read, listen to or watch this dystopian uniformness.)

Maybe not 100% Utopia but not dystopia are the Known Space series by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. They're not new but in no way outdated. An interesting key point in the series is that they contained the AI problem by saying all AI's when given enough power go crazy. A distinct possibility.

Maybe a good start is Ringworld by Larry Niven. There's hundreds of these stories based on the "known universe", all quite good.

The "Man-Kzin Wars" series is great by Niven and Jerry Pournelle

Also the "There Will be War" series is good. Now this might sound dystopian but it's not or I don't see it as so. Most all of these loosely correspond to the "known Space" universe.

Jerry Pournelle has a massive, ton, huge amount of writings on Science fact with speculative pro-growth, pro-science pro-humanity themes. All sorts of stuff on energy, space travel, etc. Pornelle was someone a lot of people had not heard of but was influential behind the scenes. He and others helped push the idea of Star Wars, Strategic Defense Initiative, or mutual assured survival instead of destruction. He helped push the DC-x SSTO program. He was involved in the space program and defense industries in may capacities and wrote a LOT of sci-fi. I must admit I like his collaborations and editorial work better than his sci-fi he did alone.
